What is KPV?

KPV is a short peptide composed of three amino acids—lysine, proline, and valine. In fact, the letters making up the name are the chemical abbreviations of these amino acids (K=lysine, P=proline, V=valine). KPV has drawn interest for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. It is derived from a larger naturally occurring hormone called alpha-melanocyte–stimulating hormone (α-MSH). The KPV portion of α-MSH plays a role in immune regulation and inflammation control. Researchers discovered that KPV retains much of α-MSH’s anti-inflammatory activity without affecting pigmentation or hormonal balance.

What is α-MSH?

Alpha-MSH is a peptide hormone produced in the pituitary gland and other tissues. It helps regulate inflammation, immune responses, and skin pigmentation. While α-MSH has broad effects in the body, its use as a therapy is limited because it also influences melanocytes (leading to tanning) and other hormonal pathways. How Does KPV Work?

KPV works primarily by modulating immune signaling pathways involved in inflammation. One of its key actions is inhibition of NF-κB, a transcription factor that controls the production of many inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. By dampening this pathway, KPV reduces excessive inflammatory signaling at the cellular level.

KPV has also been shown to stabilize epithelial barriers, particularly in the gut. This helps protect tissues from inflammatory damage and supports healing. Unlike traditional anti-inflammatory drugs, KPV does not broadly suppress the immune system; instead, it helps restore balance to an overactive inflammatory response.

KPV Side Effects

KPV has demonstrated a strong safety profile in experimental studies, with minimal toxicity observed. Because it does not affect pigmentation or major hormonal systems, side effects appear limited. Human clinical data is still emerging, and long-term effects have not yet been fully characterized.
